First graders tested the order of addends in addition sentences to find out if it changes the sum. The students engaged in a game of "find your flip flop friend" to match their addition sentence with a friend who had their same addends ordered differently. They quickly discovered that the order in which numbers are added doesn't matter. This is the commutative property of addition.
